What is a Thread Lift?

For the right candidate in Brighton PDO thread lifts can provide a great alternative to surgical facelifts and other facial procedures. The procedure involves lifting tissues without any incisions, leading to minimal downtime, and it can be done using a local anesthetic in our office. Typically, results last for up to a year, but we can extend them with repeat treatments. For those who require more comprehensive rejuvenation, we also offer combination treatments that involve surgery or non-invasive procedures such as radiofrequency, ultrasound, platelet-rich plasma/fibrin, fillers, and neurotoxins. Our ultimate aim is to create a personalized treatment plan that caters to your specific needs. A thread lift procedure can provide lift and more youthful contours in multiple areas of the face:

Jawline: Thread lifts can help define the jawline by lifting sagging jowls and creating a more sculpted appearance.

Cheeks and Midface: Threads can be used to lift the cheeks and midface, addressing sagging skin and restoring a more youthful contour.

Brows and Forehead: Thread lifts can lift the brows and forehead, reducing the appearance of drooping eyebrows and forehead wrinkles.

Nasolabial Folds: Threads can help lift and tighten the skin around the nasolabial folds, which are the lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth.

Neck: The neck area can be treated to improve the appearance of sagging skin, often referred to as a "turkey neck."

Marionette Lines: Thread lifts can target the lines that extend from the corners of the mouth down to the jawline, known as marionette lines.

Under-Eye Area: Threads can be used to address under-eye sagging and improve the appearance of bags or hollows under the eyes.

Chin: The chin area can be treated to enhance its definition and reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Amazingly Precise & Minimally Invasive

Your Thread Lift Procedure

Utilizing barbed threads, we offer nonsurgical options for mild to moderate sagging of the face and neck. Our reliable mid-facelift protocol involves entry points in key regions like the hairline and tragus. Dilute lidocaine is injected, and threads are delivered using cannulas and drawn taut to expertly lift the underlying tissues. Additional entry points may be necessary for a more extensive lift. Our skilled techniques, precise placement, and expert care ensure natural and effective results for your thread lift. To achieve the best results for your thread lift, various entry points can be considered, including the jaw angle, mastoid region, and areas anterior to the sternocleidomastoid muscle. These areas serve as anchoring points in traditional facelift surgery, making them ideal choices for the PDO thread lift procedure. Once the entry points are determined, the appropriate vectors are carefully evaluated, and the tissues are lifted along the best trajectory to achieve effective and natural outcomes.

Up to three threads can be accommodated per entry point. Before beginning the procedure, the entry point is anesthetized with a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort. An 18-gauge needle is then used to enter the skin, followed by a 21-gauge blunt cannula to dissect the planned vectors in the subcutaneous/supra SMAS plane toward the desired endpoint. To further ensure your comfort, nitrous oxide can be utilized during the process. Once the vectors are in place, the threads are delivered using a cannula technique, with the 19-gauge cannula and thread typically used as the standard. Depending on the tissue's weight, an 18-gauge or 21-gauge cannula may be used. For instance, the temporal point just anterior to the hairline and above a horizontal line from the lateral canthus is usually treated with one thread in the subcutaneous/supra SMAS plane.

This thread travels toward the middle of the nasolabial fold, another toward the middle of the marionette fold, and another toward the bulkiest point of the jowl. The tissues are gently pushed upward, engaging the barbs of the threads, resulting in a lifting effect. Any excess thread projecting from the entry point is then cut after securing additional threads, with up to three threads per entry point. This alone does an excellent job of lifting the midface. For a further lift to the cheek, jowl, submental region, and neck, additional threads may be placed at the mentioned entry points. Remember, the number of threads required depends on the amount of lift needed. Having realistic expectations along with appropriate candidate selection are essential factors for achieving the best results.

PDO Threads Frequently Asked Questions

PDO Thread lift procedures are generally well-tolerated by patients and are designed to be minimally invasive. Local anesthesia is applied before the treatment to ensure your comfort during the procedure. While you may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity at the insertion points, this is typically well-managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Once the threads are in place, you should not feel them in your face. The threads are carefully positioned beneath the skin, and any initial sensations usually subside quickly after the procedure.

The longevity of thread lift results can vary depending on factors such as the individual's skin condition, age, lifestyle, and the specific type of threads used. In general, PDO thread lift results typically last up to a year or more. Over time, the threads naturally dissolve, but the lift effect may continue due to collagen stimulation. To extend the results, some patients opt for additional boosts, which involve adding a few more threads several months after the initial procedure to enhance collagen production and maintain the lift. Dr. Vincent McGinniss and the team at Elements Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics can provide personalized advice on how to optimize the longevity of your thread lift results based on your unique needs and goals.

When considering your goals, you might find that achieving the desired results requires surgery alone or in combination with non-surgical techniques. As you choose between fillers and threads, keep in mind that fillers are great for adding volume when you're volume deficient. There are various fillers that can achieve this effectively. However, it's important to understand that while fillers can add volume, their lifting ability is debatable. In some cases, filler placement might lead to subtle "lift," but for significant lift, it can cause the tissues to re-drape in an unnatural way. Threads, on the other hand, excel at lifting tissues affected by aging and gravity. The thread-lifting procedure offers a fantastic advantage – the barbs of the thread grab the already descended volume of tissue and move it upward to a more youthful location. This means we can move the volume of tissue from where we don’t want it back to where you desire it – resulting in a more youthful and attractive appearance. Thread lifting is a remarkable way to achieve a natural-looking lift and rejuvenation for a more confident you.
